The steam turbines were plagued with problems[citation needed] from the time the ship first entered service and, despite being technically advanced and fuel-efficient in 1968, her consumption of 600 tons of fuel oil every twenty-four hours was more than expected for such a ship by the 1980s. The ship was originally planned to have a fourth boiler, but this had been omitted to reduce costs. After seventeen years her steam turbines had transported her 2,622,858 miles (2,279,201 nmi; 4,221,081 km) in 18 years.[1] Constant use of the three boilers and machinery led to spare parts often being required, with supply becoming increasingly difficult due to the age of the design of the boilers and turbines.
