By June 1921, Collins' assessment was that the IRA was within weeks, possibly even days, of collapse.[citation needed] It had few weapons or ammunition left.[5] Moreover, almost 5,000 IRA men had been imprisoned or interned and over 500 killed. Collins and Mulcahy estimated that the number of effective guerrilla fighters was down to 2,000–3,000. However, in the summer of 1921, the war was abruptly ended.
