Among the friends he made in the Netherlands are Van Leeuwenhoek and Philipp van Limborch, the leader of the Remonstrants.[1] Locke assisted Van Limborch in rebutting the Jewish philosopher Isaac Orobio de Castro.[4] While in the Netherlands, Locke had time to return to his writing, spending a great deal of time working on the Essay Concerning Human Understanding and composing the Letter on Toleration.[citation needed] He had his assistant produce drawings of ethnographic interest, of individuals in their typical attire that the Dutch encountered in their overseas empire, from Brazil, South Africa, and the Dutch East Indies.[5]
