"

In 1823 John Oxley named the river after the Governor Thomas Brisbane while surveying the area to locate a new penal settlement.[1][2] The name is of Scottish origin, dating from at least 1643, from their family lands at Rothiebrisbane, Aberdeenshire.[citation needed] This is the name now used by the Queensland Government.[3]
