The loanwords are mostly from German and Italian, while the more recently borrowed and less assimilated words are typically from English.[citation needed] Among the earliest borrowings in Slovene vocabulary are Romanisms, which began to enter the Slovene language with the settlement of Slovenia by the Slavs and continued during the Middle Ages. These are primarily toponyms: Latin Capris / Caprae → Koper, Latin Sontius → Soča. In addition, there are words such as jambor 'mast' < Latin arbor 'tree', golida 'milking pail' < Vulgar Latin galeda, hlače 'trousers' < Medieval Latin calcae, fant 'boy, lad' < Italian fante.
