Owing to the economic prosperity in the country and rapidly fading public memory of the Teapot Dome scandal, the Democratic Party's prospects looked dim. Most of the major Democratic leaders, such as William Gibbs McAdoo, were therefore content to sit out the election.[citation needed] One who did not do so was New York Governor Al Smith, who had previously made two attempts to secure the Democratic nomination.[2]
