Sir Frank Whittle, the inventor of the jet engine, was from the city.[5] The inventor James Starley founded the Coventry Sewing Machine Company in 1857[6] and was instrumental in the development of the bicycle. His nephew, J. K. Starley, worked alongside his uncle and went on to found the car company Rover.
