In 2008, the Union of South American Nations (USAN) was founded, which aimed to merge the two existing customs unions, Mercosur and the Andean Community, thus forming the third-largest trade bloc in the world.[1] The organization is planning for political integration in the European Union style, seeking to establish free movement of people, economic development, a common defense policy and the elimination of tariffs.[citation needed] According to Noam Chomsky, USAN represents that "for the first time since the European conquest, Latin America began to move towards integration".[2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]
