In 1979, Joel traveled to Havana, Cuba, to participate in the historic Havana Jam festival from March 2–4, alongside Rita Coolidge, Kris Kristofferson, Stephen Stills, the CBS Jazz All-Stars, the Trio of Doom, Fania All-Stars, Billy Swan, Bonnie Bramlett, Mike Finnegan, Weather Report, and an array of Cuban artists including Irakere, Pacho Alonso, Tata Güines and Orquesta Aragón.[17][18] Although Joel's performance was for many the highlight of the weekend,[19] CBS were unable to record or film it as planned because his wife objected to the fact that a specific deal had not been agreed with them in advance.[20] He was interviewed about his experience of playing at the event for Ernesto Juan Castellanos's documentary Havana Jam '79.[citation needed]
